Is CCA the right accountant for you?
Wondering which accounting solution is the best for your needs? Here’s how CCA compares to your other options…
-
Best for:
Side hustles and small hobby businesses earning under $15K/year gross revenue
People who know NZ’s tax laws inside-out
Advantages:
You don’t incur the costs of an accountant
You have complete control over your tax returns
Downsides:
Potentially missing claimable expenses
Making mistakes that result in tax overpayment and potential future liabilities
Tax returns are due by July instead of March the following year
Difficult to know if you’re doing it right
Can be a distraction from your core business
Consider CCA if:
Your time is better spent running your business and doing what you do best
You don’t want to pay more tax than is necessary
You plan on growing and want quality support along the way
-
Best for: Sole traders earning under $70K/year gross revenue
Advantages:
Pay-as-you-go pricing based on a percentage of revenue
Automated tax payments and calculations
Handles invoicing and payment collection
Downsides:
Only suitable for sole traders - not companies, partnerships or trusts
One-size-fits-all approach can result in missing claimable expenses
Limited advice and no personal relationship
Similar (or higher) cost to a chartered accountant once you earn $70K or more
Consider CCA if:
You value having an expert who truly understands your situation and can give tailored advice
You appreciate speaking to the same person each time you need help
You'd like a local team who can meet you face-to-face when needed
You’re a company, partnership or trust with more complex accounting requirements than a sole trader
You’re earning more than $70K/year in revenue, meaning you’re likely to get better value-for-money from a Chartered Accountant
-
Best for: People with straightforward tax situations seeking the lowest cost option
Advantage: Potentially lower fees than a Chartered Accountant
Downsides:
Tax agents aren’t held to the same competency and ethical standards as Chartered Accountants
May miss opportunities to pay less tax that a CA would spot
Quality of service varies widely across different firms and staff
Consider CCA if:
You want qualified professional advice you can rely on
You value having a team of experts in your corner, as and when required
You need someone who can handle complexity when it arises
You want an accountant that can grow with your business
-
Best for
Publicly listed companies and corporate entities
International businesses looking for one accountant for all tax jurisdictions
Organisations with more than $20m revenue
Businesses preparing for IPO or major transactions
Advantages:
Full-service departments under one roof
International networks and resources available
Extensive corporate experience
Brand recognition for stakeholders
Downsides:
Much higher fees
Often dealing with junior staff for day-to-day matters
SME clients aren’t usually a priority
Consider CCA if:
You want partner-level attention without the big firm price tag
You value having direct access to experienced accountants who know your business
You want a long-term relationship with the same team
You want the expertise of qualified CAs without paying for expensive office space and corporate overhead
-
Best for:
Small to medium businesses needing qualified accountants
Those satisfied with their current accounting relationship
Advantages
Professional qualified expertise
Comprehensive accounting services
Established processes and systems
Local market knowledge
Downsides:
You sometimes need to re-explain your situation to new staff as people change
Limited flexibility with meeting locations (often office-only)
May prioritise selling business coaching over core accounting needs
Consider CCA if:
You want to feel comfortable calling your accountant whenever you need guidance, knowing they will listen attentively and do their best to help
You value having the same experienced team who remembers your business details year after year
You need quick, clear answers without more accounting jargon than necessary (same or next business day response)
You want practical solutions focused on what matters most to your business
You're looking for a proactive partner, not just someone who shows up at tax time
You appreciate having an accountant who'll come to you when needed
You want direct access to experienced CAs who are invested in your success
-
You need experienced accountants who are focused on your business success
You want to work with the same team year after year, rather than regularly needing to explain your situation to new staff
You want an accountant who follows through on commitments without needing to be chased
You want to remain legally compliant without paying more tax than necessary
You're looking for clear and easily understandable advice that's practical and actionable
You need responsive support with quick access to help for all queries, large and small
You appreciate the flexibility of an accounting service tailored to your specific and evolving needs
Meet the team
While expert accounting is essential, we believe it's the people behind the numbers that make the real difference. You'll work with accountants who ensure everything is done right while making the whole process easy and enjoyable, too.
